How Do I Improve My Self-Esteem?

What Is Low Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is the opinion that we have about ourselves. If you find yourself feeling negative about yourself or having negative thoughts about yourself then you’re said to be suffering from low self-esteem and confidence. On the other hand, when we feel positive about ourselves, it makes life easier and helps us to deal with situations that may arise in our lives.

14 Ways To Boost Your Confidence

Why Is Self-Esteem Important?

Low self-esteem can negatively affect our ability to tackle the challenges that life throws at us. It’s important that we learn to feel positive about ourselves, so that we can have the confidence to face daily issues and the highs and lows that we have in our lives.

How Do I Recognise The Signs Of Low Self-Esteem?

If you tend to avoid social situations, are afraid of trying new things and tend to avoid challenges which take you outside of your comfort zone, then you may be suffering from low self-esteem and have confidence issues. Avoiding these situations in the short-term may help to make you feel safe from harm and stress but long-term you’ll tend to find that this bahaviour reinforces your fears and your fears will increase in intensity. This can even lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. So it’s important that these issues are addressed and treatment is sought. Some sufferers of low self-esteem turn to self medication such as drugs and alcohol. Smoking can also common amongst people who have low self-esteem.

At Cryotherapy Barnsley, in many cases we’ve found a positive correlation with women who have suffered from urinary incontinence for some time before seeking our treatment, and in this time, tended to go out less. Their self-confidence has inevitably suffered.

How Do I Overcome Low Self-Esteem?

Overcoming self-esteem is all about challenging the negative ideas and beliefs you have built up over time about yourself and modifying these behaviours and thought processes. It can be about setting the bar higher in terms of challenging yourself to come out of your comfort zone. Trying new things. Meeting new people and looking people in the eye when speaking to them. It could be about starting that new course that you’ve been putting off. It may be worth thinking back to when you first started to feel this way. Was there a catalyst? A specific event? Also writing down positive things about yourself can really help. Do a few positive things for yourself daily and these new daily good habits will be formed.

How Do I Build Confidence And Self-Esteem?

Start to look at why you don’t feel so good about yourself and begin to make small changes every day. Is there anyone in your life who tends to bring you down? Then spend less time with them, avoid them or cut them out of your life completely. Start to spend time with people who have a positive influence on your life and make you feel good about yourself. Make time for yourself – some “me time”. No-one is perfect but do want to become the best possible versions of ourselves. That doesn’t mean we have to criticise ourselves all of the time but we should celebrate what we are good at, significant milestones in our lives, the things we’ve achieved. Learning to say no and be assertive can be a big part of building your confidence.

How Do I Take Steps To Feel Better About Myself?

Start by writing down all of the positive things about yourself and looking at them daily. Then set yourself challenges to overcome. Goal setting can give you something to work towards and once you’ve achieved them, you’ll feel great. This will really improve your self-esteem. Feeling better about yourself is all about taking steps to improve your confidence a step at a time. If you fail, then keep trying. You know what they say – if at first you don’t succeed – try, try again.
